Concept
Debentures deposited as collateral security back a loan without being an independent liability. Under the journal-entry method (Method 2) they are recorded Debenture Suspense A/c Dr. / To Debentures A/c at face value and the suspense account is deducted from the debentures in the balance sheet. The face value of collateral debentures can exceed the loan amount — that is normal and does not increase the borrowing shown.
Working Note
- First loan collateral = 1,400 × ₹100 = ₹1,40,000.
- Second loan collateral = 1,000 × ₹100 = ₹1,00,000.
- Total collateral debentures = ₹2,40,000; total bank loans = ₹1,20,000 + ₹80,000 = ₹2,00,000.
