Christopher's capital of ₹50,000 and the ₹10,000 goodwill brought in cash are recorded; the ₹10,000 premium and the unpaid ₹5,000 of goodwill are credited to the sacrificing partners Aditya and Balan in their sacrificing ratio of 2:3 (Aditya ₹6,000 and Balan ₹9,000 in total).

Sacrificing ratio

Old ratio Aditya : Balan = 3:2, i.e. Aditya 3/5, Balan 2/5.

New ratio Aditya : Balan : Christopher = 2:1:1, i.e. Aditya 1/2, Balan 1/4, Christopher 1/4.

Sacrifice = old share - new share:

  • Aditya = 3/5-1/2 = 1/10 = 2/20
  • Balan = 2/5-1/4 = 3/20

Sacrificing ratio = 2:3.

Goodwill split

Christopher's share of goodwill is ₹15,000; he brings only ₹10,000 in cash, leaving ₹5,000 unpaid. Both the cash premium and the unpaid amount are credited to the sacrificing partners in 2:3.

  • On ₹10,000: Aditya =10,000×2/5= ₹4,000; Balan =10,000×3/5= ₹6,000.
  • On ₹5,000: Aditya =5,000×2/5= ₹2,000; Balan =5,000×3/5= ₹3,000.
