SEBI is the Securities and Exchange Board of India, the regulatory authority for the securities/capital market, established to protect investors' interests and promote the orderly development of the market; its functions are grouped as protective, developmental and regulatory.

SEBI was set up by the Government of India to regulate the functioning of stock exchanges and the securities market, mainly to protect the interests of investors in securities and to promote and regulate the capital market. Its functions fall into three broad categories:

  • Protective functions — aimed directly at safeguarding investors' interests, such as prohibiting fraudulent and unfair trade practices, controlling insider trading, promoting fair practices and a code of conduct for intermediaries, and undertaking investor education and awareness programmes.
  • Developmental functions — aimed at promoting and developing the securities market, such as training intermediaries, conducting research and publishing useful information, promoting self-regulatory organisations, and permitting trading in derivatives. …
