The planning process consists of the following steps, taken in order:
- Setting objectives: The manager first decides clearly what the organisation (or unit) wants to achieve — the end result the whole plan is meant to produce.
- Developing premises: Assumptions are made about the future environment — both internal (available resources, policies) and external (government regulation, competition, economic conditions) — on which the plan will be based.
- Identifying alternative courses of action: Once objectives and premises are clear, several possible ways of achieving the objective are identified, rather than settling for the first idea.
- Evaluating alternatives: Each alternative is examined for its advantages, disadvantages, costs, risks, and consequences, in light of the premises set earlier.
