Production function = output as a function of inputs; short run has a fixed factor (law of variable proportions), long run has none (returns to scale).

A production function can be written as Q = f(L, K), where Q is maximum output, L is labour, and K is capital, for a given state of technology — it shows the technically most efficient (maximum possible) output from any given combination of inputs.

Short-run production function: at least one factor — typically capital/plant and machinery — is fixed in quantity, because it cannot be changed quickly. Only the variable factor (usually labour) can be increased or decreased. Here, output behaviour as the variable factor changes is explained by the Law of Variable Proportions: Marginal Product of the variable factor first rises (increasing returns), then falls (diminishing returns), and may eventually turn negative.
