Production function Q = f(L, K) gives maximum output from given input quantities; illustrated with a worked numerical example.

A production function is a purely technical relationship (independent of input/output prices) that specifies the MAXIMUM output obtainable from every possible combination of inputs, given the existing state of technology. It is written generally as Q = f(L, K), where Q is output, L is labour, and K is capital.

Worked example: suppose a firm's production function is Q = 2L + 3K. If the firm employs L = 4 units of labour and K = 2 units of capital, output is: Q = (2 × 4) + (3 × 2) = 8 + 6 = 14 units. If the firm instead doubles both inputs to L = 8, K = 4: Q = (2×8) + (3×4) = 16 + 12 = 28 units — exactly double the original output of 14, illustrating constant returns to scale for this particular (linear) production function.
