Friction is a force that opposes the motion between two surfaces that are in contact. It always acts in the direction opposite to the way an object is moving — or trying to move. Friction also produces heat: rub your hands together quickly and they grow warmer.
Friction is a contact force that acts against the motion of an object, so it can bring moving objects to rest. Roll a ball across a floor and, after a short while, friction brings it to a stop.
