Surya Bhedhana Pranayama always inhales through the right nostril and exhales through the left -- never the reverse -- with a breath-retention step in between.

The unit's technique: sit in any meditation posture with eyes closed. Close the left nostril with the middle and ring finger of the right hand, and slowly inhale through the right nostril as long as is comfortable. Then lower the hand to the knee and RETAIN the breath by pressing the chin firmly against the chest (the chin lock), while simultaneously contracting the rectum muscles (anal lock) -- this retention period should be built up gradually over practice, not forced on the first attempt.
