Plant breeding = deliberate manipulation of plants to create improved, desired varieties. Objectives: (1) higher yield & better quality; (2) resistance to disease/pests and to environmental (abiotic) stresses.

[!NOTE]

Plant breeding belongs to the Strategies for Enhancement in Food Production chapter, which is not part of the current rationalised NCERT/CBSE-aligned Class-12 syllabus. It is answered here in full for completeness; the nearest retained chapter is Biotechnology and its Applications.

Concept

Plant breeding is the purposeful manipulation of plant species (by selection, hybridisation, mutation, and modern biotechnology) in order to create plant varieties better suited to human requirements — higher-yielding, more nutritious, and more resistant. It has been practised since humans began agriculture (~9000–11000 years ago) and drove the Green Revolution.

Objectives of plant breeding

  1. Increased yield and improved quality: develop varieties that give higher crop yield and better quality produce — e.g. higher protein in pulses, better oil quality, better baking quality of wheat.
  2. Resistance to diseases, pests and stresses: develop varieties resistant to pathogens (fungi, bacteria, viruses) and insect pests, and tolerant of environmental (abiotic) stresses such as drought, salinity, extreme temperature and waterlogging. …
