A bioreactor is a vessel for large-scale growth of microbes/cells to produce biotech products; chemical safety testing evaluates the safety of biotechnology products before release.

(a) Bioreactor: A bioreactor is a large vessel (ranging from litres to thousands of litres in capacity) in which raw materials are biologically converted, using microbial, plant, animal or human cells (or their enzymes), into specific products such as enzymes, vaccines or antibiotics, under optimised conditions of temperature, pH, substrate, salts, vitamins and oxygen. The most commonly used type is the stirred-tank bioreactor, which has a stirrer to mix the contents and ensure uniform aeration and distribution of nutrients/oxygen throughout the vessel.
