Energy flows one way from the sun; nutrients are recycled.
Concept
A pond is a good example of a small, self-sufficient natural (aquatic) ecosystem, where the biotic community interacts with its abiotic (physico-chemical) environment. Draw a pond in cross-section (water surface, water column, and muddy bottom) and label the following components.
Components — to draw and label
- Abiotic components: the non-living part —
- Water, sunlight (penetrating the surface), temperature;
- Dissolved gases — and ;
- Inorganic substances — minerals/salts (C, N, P, Ca) and organic compounds (proteins, lipids) largely in the bottom sediment.
- Producers (autotrophs): green organisms that trap solar energy and make food —
- Phytoplankton — microscopic floating algae such as Spirogyra, Volvox, Chlamydomonas, diatoms;
- Rooted and floating macrophytes — Hydrilla, Vallisneria, Typha, lotus, Wolffia.
- Consumers (heterotrophs): shown at successive levels —
- Primary consumers (herbivores): zooplankton and small animals (rotifers, protozoa, small crustacea) that feed on producers;
- Secondary consumers (carnivores): insects and small fish that eat the primary consumers;
- Tertiary consumers (top carnivores): large fish, and water birds.
- Decomposers (micro-consumers): bacteria and fungi (mostly at the bottom) that break down dead plants and animals, releasing nutrients back into the water for reuse by producers. …
