The Green House effect is the natural (and now human-enhanced) warming of the Earth's atmosphere caused by certain gases — called greenhouse gases (GHGs) — that trap infrared (heat) radiation reflected from the Earth's surface, preventing it from escaping into space. The main contributing causes are: increased burning of fossil fuels (coal, petroleum) releasing excess carbon dioxide; deforestation, which reduces CO2 uptake by plants; increased methane from paddy fields, cattle and landfills; nitrous oxide from fertiliser use and industrial activity; chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) from refrigerants, aerosols and industrial processes; and rising water vapour due to global warming itself. Their accumulation has intensified the greenhouse effect beyond its natural, life-sustaining level, causing global warming and climate change.
OR: (a) Radioactive wastes are wastes containing radioactive substances (from nuclear power plants, mining/processing of radioactive ores, and use of radioisotopes in medicine/research) that emit harmful ionising radiation; they must be safely contained/stored (often in shielded, deep-buried containers) since they can cause mutations, cancer and other health/environmental hazards and remain hazardous for very long periods. …
