Youngsters take alcohol/drugs mainly out of curiosity, peer pressure, and to escape stress/failure, worsened by media glamorisation. It is prevented by avoiding peer pressure, healthy outlets (sports/hobbies), education about the harms, parental/teacher support and counselling/rehabilitation.

Concept

Adolescence (about 12–18 years) is a period of rapid physical and emotional change, which makes young people especially vulnerable to experimenting with alcohol and drugs. Recognising why they start is the key to prevention.

What motivates youngsters (causes)

  1. Curiosity and the sense of adventure/experimentation — the desire to try something new or "forbidden".
  2. Peer pressure — wanting to fit in with, or be accepted by, friends who use these substances.
  3. To escape stress — from academic failure, family problems, loneliness or depression.
  4. Family and school pressure — high expectations and inability to cope.
  5. Media and glamorisation — films and advertisements portraying alcohol/drugs as fashionable.
  6. Easy availability and lack of awareness of the harmful effects.

How it can be avoided (prevention)

  1. Avoid undue peer pressure — every child need not perform to unrealistic levels; respect each child's normal capabilities.
