Sporozoite formation → in the female Anopheles mosquito (gut wall/oocyst → salivary glands); host = mosquito. Amoeboid stage (trophozoite) → in the human liver cells and RBCs; host = human.

Concept

The malarial parasite Plasmodium is digenetic — it needs two hosts to complete its life cycle: the female Anopheles mosquito (the definitive host, where sexual reproduction and sporozoite formation occur) and humans (the intermediate host, where asexual multiplication occurs).

The two events

  • (i) Formation of sporozoites: takes place inside the female Anopheles mosquito. After fertilisation in the mosquito's gut, an oocyst forms on the gut (stomach) wall; it divides to produce many sporozoites, which migrate to and are stored in the mosquito's salivary glands (from where they are injected into humans during a bite).
    • Host: female Anopheles mosquito; body part: gut wall → salivary glands. …
