Morphine is a narcotic-analgesic opioid alkaloid extracted from the latex of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). Chemically it is a pentacyclic (phenanthrene-based) alkaloid built around a morphinan skeleton, carrying two hydroxyl (-OH) groups (a phenolic -OH at C3 and an allylic -OH at C6) and a nitrogen-containing piperidine ring fused to the phenanthrene core, with an oxygen bridge linking C4 and C5.
