Colostrum = the yellowish first milk (first few days after birth), rich in antibodies (IgA) and proteins. It gives the newborn passive (colostral) immunity, protecting it from infections in its earliest days.

Concept

Towards the end of pregnancy and just after childbirth, the mammary glands, under the hormone prolactin, begin milk secretion (lactation). The milk produced during the first few days is special and is called colostrum.

What colostrum is

  • A thick, yellowish fluid, the first milk secreted for about the first 2–3 days after delivery.
  • Rich in antibodies (especially immunoglobulin A, IgA), proteins, vitamins and minerals, but low in fat and sugar.

Why it is necessary for the newborn
