A T.S. of the ovary shows an outer germinal epithelium and cortex full of developing follicles surrounding an inner medulla. OR: the menstrual cycle has four phases, and a mature sperm has a head, midpiece and tail.

A transverse section (T.S.) of a woman's ovary shows, from outside to inside: a thin outer covering, the germinal epithelium; beneath it, a dense connective-tissue layer, the tunica albuginea; then a wide peripheral cortex, which contains numerous ovarian follicles in different stages of development — primordial follicles, growing primary and secondary follicles, and the large, fluid-filled mature Graafian follicle — along with corpora lutea (remnants of follicles that have already ovulated) and degenerating corpora albicantia; and finally an inner medulla composed of loose connective tissue (stroma) richly supplied with blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves that nourish the ovary.
