Spermatogenesis produces four sperm per germ cell continuously from puberty; oogenesis produces one functional ovum (with polar bodies) per menstrual cycle, arrested at two points.

Spermatogenesis: This is the process of formation of haploid spermatozoa from diploid germinal cells, occurring in the seminiferous tubules of the testis, beginning at puberty under hormonal control (hypothalamic GnRH stimulates the pituitary to release LH and FSH, which act on the testis to produce testosterone). Spermatogonia (2n), present on the inner wall of seminiferous tubules, multiply by mitosis to increase in number; some of them (primary spermatocytes, 2n) undergo meiosis I to form secondary spermatocytes (n); these undergo meiosis II to form spermatids (n). Spermatids then undergo spermiogenesis, a process of transformation into mature, motile spermatozoa (developing an acrosome, condensed nucleus, midpiece with mitochondria, and a tail). Sertoli cells within the seminiferous tubules provide nutrition and support to the developing sperm.
