Methanogenic bacteria thrive in strictly anaerobic (oxygen-free) environments; activated sludge is an aerobic process where oxygen is deliberately supplied, making it unsuitable for these microbes.

Methanogenic bacteria belong to the domain Archaea and are remarkable for their ability to produce methane gas as a metabolic byproduct. These organisms are obligate anaerobes, meaning they cannot survive in the presence of oxygen. Understanding where they flourish—and where they cannot—requires looking at the oxygen availability in different environments.

In the rumen of cattle, methanogenic bacteria are abundant. The rumen is a fermentation chamber where plant material is broken down by a complex microbial community in completely anaerobic conditions. Methanogens here convert hydrogen and carbon dioxide (produced by other microbes) into methane, which cattle release through belching. This is a classic oxygen-free niche.

Similarly, a gobar gas plant (biogas digester) is designed specifically to create anaerobic conditions. Cattle dung and other organic waste decompose in sealed chambers without air, and methanogenic bacteria convert the organic matter into biogas—a mixture rich in methane. The entire technology depends on maintaining an oxygen-free environment for these bacteria to work.

The bottom of water-logged paddy fields also provides ideal conditions. When soil is submerged under water for extended periods, oxygen diffusion is blocked, creating anaerobic pockets in the deeper layers. Methanogenic bacteria thrive here, breaking down organic matter and releasing methane—this is why rice paddies are significant sources of atmospheric methane. …
