Transcription and translation are the two major steps of gene expression, but they differ significantly.

Transcription is the process of copying genetic information from the template strand of DNA into a complementary, single-stranded RNA molecule, catalysed by the enzyme RNA polymerase. In eukaryotes it occurs in the nucleus, and its product is messenger RNA (along with rRNA and tRNA).
