During translation, the ribosome acts as the physical machine that reads mRNA codons and catalyses peptide-bond formation, moving stepwise along the mRNA.

The ribosome plays two essential roles during translation:

  1. Site of polypeptide synthesis: The ribosome (composed of a large and a small subunit, each with rRNA and proteins) provides the physical site where the genetic code carried by mRNA is translated.
