tRNA (transfer RNA) is a small clover-leaf-shaped adapter molecule that reads mRNA codons through its anticodon and delivers the correct amino acid to the ribosome during protein synthesis.

Transfer RNA (tRNA), also called soluble RNA (sRNA), is the smallest of the RNAs (~75–90 nucleotides). It acts as an adapter molecule during translation — Francis Crick had postulated the need for such an adapter.

Structure:

  • In two dimensions it looks like a clover-leaf, and in three dimensions it is folded into an inverted-L (or L) shape.
  • It has an anticodon loop carrying a triplet anticodon that is complementary to (and base-pairs with) the codon on the mRNA.
  • It has an amino-acid acceptor end at the 3' terminus (the -CCA end) to which the specific amino acid is attached (aminoacylation/charging).
