Common interspecific interactions in nature include predation, competition and mutualism (any three), which shape community structure.

Any three of the following population interactions may be named and briefly described: (1) Predation — one organism (predator) captures and feeds on another (prey), e.g. a tiger preying on a deer; predators help control prey population and maintain species diversity. (2) Competition — occurs when two species compete for the same limited resource (food, space, light), negatively affecting the growth/survival of both, e.g. competition between the flamingo and resident fish for zooplankton food. (3) Mutualism — an interaction beneficial to both interacting species, e.g. the relationship between fig trees (Ficus) and their specific pollinator wasps, or lichens (a symbiotic association of fungus and alga). (4) Commensalism — one species benefits while the other is neither harmed nor benefitted, e.g. an orchid growing as an epiphyte on a mango branch. (5) Parasitism — one organism (parasite) lives on/in another (host) and derives nutrition at the host's expense, often harming it, e.g. Cuscuta parasitizing a host plant, or the malarial parasite Plasmodium in humans. (6) Amensalism — one species is harmed while the other is unaffected, e.g. a large tree shading out a small plant beneath it.

OR: (a) Sacred groves are patches of forest set aside and protected by local communities on religious/cultural grounds (found in parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, etc.); undisturbed by local people, they harbour rich, often rare, biodiversity and act as valuable in-situ conservation sites. …
