The monohybrid cross shows that of two contrasting alleles, only the dominant one is expressed in the heterozygote.

Consider a monohybrid cross between a pure-breeding tall pea plant (TT) and a pure-breeding dwarf pea plant (tt). All F1 progeny are heterozygous (Tt) and are tall — even though they carry one allele for dwarfness, only the tall (dominant, T) allele is phenotypically expressed, while the dwarf (recessive, t) allele remains hidden. This is the Law of Dominance: when two contrasting alleles (forms of a gene) are present together in a heterozygote, only one — the dominant allele — manifests in the phenotype, and the other — recessive — allele does not express itself but is not lost, being retained and transmitted unchanged.

When F1 (Tt) is self-pollinated, the F2 generation appears in a phenotypic ratio of 3 tall : 1 dwarf and a genotypic ratio of 1 TT : 2 Tt : 1 tt. The reappearance of the dwarf phenotype in 1/4 of the F2 plants (from the previously 'hidden' recessive allele of the Tt heterozygotes) confirms that characters are controlled by discrete, particulate hereditary factors (alleles) that segregate and are not blended, and that the recessive allele, though masked in F1, is preserved and can reappear in later generations.

Salient features of the Watson-Crick double-helix model of DNA:

  1. DNA consists of two polynucleotide chains coiled around a common axis in a right-handed double helix.
  2. The two chains are antiparallel — one runs 5'→3' while the other runs 3'→5'.
  3. The sugar-phosphate backbones lie on the outside, while the nitrogenous bases are stacked inside, perpendicular to the helix axis. …
