A test cross reveals the unknown genotype of a dominant-phenotype individual by crossing it with a homozygous recessive individual and observing the offspring ratio.

A test cross is a genetic cross in which an organism showing the dominant phenotype but of unknown genotype (i.e. it could be either homozygous dominant or heterozygous) is crossed with an organism that is homozygous recessive for the trait in question. Since the recessive parent can only contribute recessive alleles, the phenotypic ratio of the offspring directly reveals the genotype of the unknown parent.

Diagrammatic explanation (using Mendel's pea plant example — height, where T = tall, dominant; t = dwarf, recessive):

Let the individual with the dominant tall phenotype but unknown genotype be crossed with a homozygous recessive dwarf plant (tt):

Case 1 — If the tall parent is homozygous (TT):

TT (tall) × tt (dwarf) → all offspring are Tt (tall)

Result: 100% tall offspring (ratio 1 : 0, i.e. no dwarf plants appear).

Case 2 — If the tall parent is heterozygous (Tt): …
