Carbylamine: 1∘^\circ amine + CHCl3_3/KOH →\to RNC (foul smell). Hofmann bromamide: RCONH2_2 + Br2_2/KOH →\to RNH2_2 (one C less).

(a) Carbylamine reaction (isocyanide test). A primary amine (aliphatic or aromatic), when heated with chloroform and alcoholic potassium hydroxide, forms an isocyanide (carbylamine) with an extremely offensive smell — a test for primary amines:

R−NH2+CHCl3+3KOH→ΔR−N≡C+3KCl+3H2OR{-}NH_2 + CHCl_3 + 3KOH \xrightarrow{\Delta} R{-}N{\equiv}C + 3KCl + 3H_2O

(Secondary and tertiary amines do not give this test.)
