Question 110 of 110

Q.Explain the following :

(i) Amino acids behave like salts rather than simple amines or carboxylic acids.
(ii) The two strands of DNA are complementary to each other.

(i) Zwitterion (internal salt) ⇒\Rightarrow salt-like behaviour. (ii) Specific base pairing (A–T, G–C) makes the two strands complementary. (iii) Oxidation to gluconic acid by bromine water proves an aldehyde group.

Concept. Amino acids, DNA structure, and glucose chemistry — CBSE Class-12 biomolecules.

(i) An amino acid has both an acidic −COOH-COOH and a basic −NH2-NH_2 group. Internal proton transfer gives a dipolar ion (zwitterion): H3N+ ⁣− ⁣CHR ⁣− ⁣COO−H_3\overset{+}{N}\!-\!CHR\!-\!COO^-. Being an internal salt, it has high melting points, is water-soluble and behaves as a salt rather than as a simple amine or carboxylic acid.

(ii) In the DNA double helix the two strands are held by hydrogen bonds between complementary bases: adenine pairs only with thymine (2 H-bonds) and guanine pairs only with cytosine (3 H-bonds). Hence the base sequence of one strand exactly dictates the other — the strands are complementary.
