Double salts break up into all their simple ions in water; coordination compounds keep their complex ion intact and do not release the ligand/central-metal ions freely.

Concept. Both are addition ("molecular") compounds formed by combining two stable salts, but they behave differently on dissolving.

Double salt.

  • Exists only in the solid state.
  • On dissolving in water it dissociates completely into all its constituent ions, losing its own identity.
  • Example: Mohr's salt, FeSO4⋅(NH4)2SO4⋅6H2OFeSO_4\cdot(NH_4)_2SO_4\cdot6H_2O, gives Fe2+Fe^{2+}, NH4+NH_4^+ and SO42−SO_4^{2-} ions (all normal tests positive). Also potash alum.

Coordination compound.

  • Contains a complex ion that retains its identity in solution. …
