Cell (k): Fe+2H+→Fe2++H2Fe + 2H^+ \rightarrow Fe^{2+} + H_2. Cell (kh): H2+Cl2→2H++2Cl−H_2 + Cl_2 \rightarrow 2H^+ + 2Cl^-.

Concept. In cell notation the left electrode is the anode (oxidation) and the right electrode is the cathode (reduction). Adding the two half-reactions (electrons cancelling) gives the net cell reaction.

(k) Fe ∣ Fe2+ ∣∣ H2SO4 ∣ H2(Pt)Fe\,|\,Fe^{2+}\,||\,H_2SO_4\,|\,H_2(Pt)

  • Anode (oxidation): Fe→Fe2++2e−Fe \rightarrow Fe^{2+} + 2e^-
  • Cathode (reduction): 2H++2e−→H22H^+ + 2e^- \rightarrow H_2
  • Net: Fe+2H+→Fe2++H2Fe + 2H^+ \rightarrow Fe^{2+} + H_2

(kh) (Pt)H2 ∣ HCl ∣∣ Cl2(Pt)(Pt)H_2\,|\,HCl\,||\,Cl_2(Pt) …
