Kohlrausch: Λm∘=u+λ+∘+u−λ−∘\Lambda_m^\circ = u_+\lambda_+^\circ + u_-\lambda_-^\circ. Strong electrolyte = fully ionised (NaCl); weak = partly ionised (CH3_3COOH).

  1. Kohlrausch's law of independent migration of ions. At infinite dilution, when dissociation is complete, each ion contributes independently to the total conductivity irrespective of the other ion. So the limiting molar conductivity of an electrolyte is the sum of the limiting molar conductivities of its cations and anions: Λm∘=u+λ+∘+u−λ−∘\Lambda_m^\circ = u_+\lambda_+^\circ + u_-\lambda_-^\circ where u+,u− u_+, u_- are the numbers of cations and anions per formula unit. It is used to find Λm∘\Lambda_m^\circ of weak electrolytes and their degree of dissociation.
  2. Short notes.
  • (i) Strong electrolyte: an electrolyte that is almost completely dissociated into ions in aqueous solution, e.g. NaCl, HCl, KOH. Its molar conductivity is high and changes only slightly with dilution. …
