The relation "brother of" is transitive (if a is brother of b and b is brother of c, then a is brother of c) but not symmetric (if a is brother of b, b may not be a brother of a — b could be a sister). So the correct option is (B).

The key to this problem is to stop thinking of relations as abstract symbols and instead picture real people. The relation RR is defined on the set of all children in a family. That set includes both boys and girls. The statement "aRbaRb" means "aa is the brother of bb".

Let’s unpack what "brother" means. If aa is the brother of bb, then aa must be male. bb can be male or female — a brother can have a brother or a sister. That one asymmetry is the heart of the problem.

  1. Check symmetry. Symmetry would require: if aRbaRb then bRabRa. That is, if aa is the brother of bb, then bb must be the brother of aa. But bb could be a girl. A girl is not anyone's brother. So bRabRa fails whenever bb is female. Even if bb is male, bb is still a brother of aa only if aa is male — which aa is, by definition. So for two brothers, aRbaRb and bRabRa both hold. But the relation fails symmetry because it doesn't hold for all cases. A single counterexample is enough: take aa as a boy and bb as his sister. Then aRbaRb is true, but bRabRa is false. Hence RR is not symmetric.

  2. Check transitivity. Transitivity says: if aRbaRb and bRcbRc, then aRcaRc. Let’s test this. If aa is the brother of bb, then aa is male. If bb is the brother of cc, then bb is also male. So aa and bb are both boys. Now, bb being the brother of cc means bb and cc share at least one parent. Since aa is also a brother of bb, aa and bb share parents. Therefore aa and cc share the same parents (through bb). And aa is male. So aa is indeed the brother of cc. This holds regardless of cc's gender. So transitivity works. …
