Electric flux ϕE=∫E⃗⋅dA⃗\phi_E=\int\vec E\cdot d\vec A; Gauss's law: ∮E⃗⋅dA⃗=qenc/ε0\oint \vec E\cdot d\vec A = q_{enc}/\varepsilon_0.

Electric flux. The electric flux through a surface is a measure of the number of electric field lines passing (normally) through it. For a small area dA⃗d\vec A (its direction along the outward normal) in a field E⃗\vec E,

dϕE=E⃗⋅dA⃗=E dAcos⁡θd\phi_E = \vec E\cdot d\vec A = E\,dA\cos\theta

and over a whole surface

ϕE=∫SE⃗⋅dA⃗\phi_E = \int_S \vec E\cdot d\vec A

It is a scalar; SI unit N m2C−1\text{N m}^2\text{C}^{-1} (or V·m).

Gauss's theorem — statement. The total (net) electric flux through any closed surface is equal to 1ε0\dfrac{1}{\varepsilon_0} times the net electric charge enclosed by that surface, and is independent of the shape/size of the surface or the position of charges inside it.

Mathematical form.

∮SE⃗⋅dA⃗=qencε0\oint_S \vec E\cdot d\vec A = \frac{q_{enc}}{\varepsilon_0} …
