Two fundamental properties of electric charge are additivity and quantisation.

1. Additivity of charges: Electric charges add up algebraically, like real numbers (scalars), not like vectors. If a system contains charges q1,q2,q3,…,qnq_1, q_2, q_3, \ldots, q_n, the total charge of the system is simply the algebraic sum q1+q2+q3+⋯+qnq_1+q_2+q_3+\cdots+q_n, taking due account of the sign (positive or negative) of each charge.

2. Quantisation of charge: Electric charge exists only in discrete packets, i.e., any observable charge qq is always an integral multiple of the elementary charge ee (the charge on an electron/proton):

q=ne,n=0,±1,±2,…q = ne,\qquad n = 0,\pm1,\pm2,\ldots …
