X-rays: short-wavelength (∼10−10\sim10^{-10} m), highly penetrating EM waves — used for medical imaging and crystal/flaw studies.

Two properties of X-rays.

  1. They have very short wavelength (∼10−10 m\sim 10^{-10}\,\text{m}, i.e. about 0.1 nm0.1\,\text{nm}) and correspondingly high frequency and photon energy; being electromagnetic waves they travel at the speed of light and are not deflected by electric or magnetic fields.
  2. They have high penetrating power and can ionise gases and affect photographic plates; harder (shorter-wavelength) X-rays penetrate more.

Two uses of X-rays.

  1. Medical diagnosis — radiographs to examine bones, fractures and internal organs, and in radiotherapy to treat certain cancers. …
