Half-life = time for the sample to halve; 1/16=(1/2)41/16=(1/2)^4 ⇒ 44 half-lives =240=240 years.

Meaning of half-life. The half-life T1/2T_{1/2} of a radioactive material is the time in which the number of undecayed (active) nuclei — and hence the activity — reduces to one-half of its initial value. It is a constant for a given nuclide.

Numerical. After nn half-lives the remaining fraction is

NN0=(12)n\frac{N}{N_0} = \left(\frac12\right)^n

We need N/N0=1/16N/N_0 = 1/16:

116=(12)4  ⇒  n=4\frac{1}{16} = \left(\frac12\right)^4 \;\Rightarrow\; n = 4 …
