For two thin lenses in contact, 1F=1f1+1f2\dfrac{1}{F}=\dfrac{1}{f_1}+\dfrac{1}{f_2}.

Concept. Consider two thin lenses of focal lengths f1f_1 and f2f_2 placed in contact (separation ≈0\approx 0), with an object OO on the axis. The first lens forms an image which serves as the object for the second lens.

Derivation. For an object at distance uu, let the first lens form its image at distance v1v_1:

1v1−1u=1f1(1)\frac{1}{v_1} - \frac{1}{u} = \frac{1}{f_1} \quad (1)

This image acts as the object for the second lens (object distance v1v_1, since the lenses are in contact), giving the final image at vv:

1v−1v1=1f2(2)\frac{1}{v} - \frac{1}{v_1} = \frac{1}{f_2} \quad (2)

Adding (1) and (2), the 1/v11/v_1 terms cancel:

1v−1u=1f1+1f2\frac{1}{v} - \frac{1}{u} = \frac{1}{f_1} + \frac{1}{f_2} …
