Rayleigh scattering by air molecules favours short (blue) wavelengths, filling the sky with scattered blue light.

Sunlight passing through the atmosphere is scattered by the gas molecules and fine particles present in the air. According to Rayleigh's law, the intensity of scattered light varies as I∝1λ4I \propto \dfrac{1}{\lambda^4}, so shorter wavelengths (blue, violet end of the visible spectrum) are scattered far more strongly than longer wavelengths (red end). Although violet is scattered even more than blue, the eye is more sensitive to blue and much of the violet is absorbed in the upper atmosphere; as a result, scattered blue light reaches our eyes from every direction in the sky, making the sky look blue.
