Posting is the process of transferring entries from the journal (or subsidiary books) to the individual accounts opened in the ledger, so that all transactions affecting a particular account are brought together in that account.

Meaning. After a transaction is recorded in the journal, it must be classified account-wise. This grouping is done in the ledger, and the act of carrying each journal figure into its ledger account is called posting. Every journal entry has a debit and a credit; posting takes each of these to the correct side of the correct account.

How it is done.

  • The account that is debited in the journal is written on the debit side of that account in the ledger, using the words 'To …' before the name of the corresponding credit account.
  • The account that is credited in the journal is written on the credit side of that account in the ledger, using the words 'By …' before the name of the corresponding debit account.
  • The date and the folio references are also recorded, so the ledger entry can be traced back to the journal.
