Data held in systems or moving across networks can be stolen or altered; the two principal threats are viruses and the interception of data during transmission.

Information is power — and the danger lies in that power falling into the wrong hands. Both data stored in systems and data en route during transmission are exposed to theft or modification, done either for a selfish motive or simply for 'fun and adventure'. The two major threats, and their remedies, are:

  • Virus: The word VIRUS stands for 'Vital Information Under Siege'. A virus is a program — a series of commands — that replicates itself on other computer systems. Its effects operate at rising levels of severity:

    • Level 1 — mere annoyance, such as an unwanted on-screen display;
    • Level 2 — disruption of the system's normal functioning;
    • Level 3 — damage to the target's data files;
    • Level 4 — complete destruction of the system.

    Remedy: installing anti-virus software and, crucially, updating it in a timely manner, and scanning files and disks with it, protects data files, folders and systems from virus attacks. …
