A current-affairs research project — study the GST rate structure and slot the given goods and services into the five GST slabs.

Background. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) was rolled out by the Government of India on 1 July 2017. Under it, goods and services are classified into five rate slabs — 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. GST is an indirect tax that replaced many earlier taxes and helps remove the cascading (tax-on-tax) effect. The task is to collect information on GST from newspapers, media news, the internet and business magazines, and classify the given goods and services under these five rates.

How to carry out the project:

  • Step 1 — Gather reliable information. Use recent newspapers, business magazines, credible news websites and official sources to find the current GST rate applicable to each item on your list. Rates are revised from time to time, so use up-to-date sources.
  • Step 2 — Understand the logic of the slabs (a general guide):
    • 0% (nil): basic essentials and many unbranded food staples, meant to keep necessities affordable.
    • 5%: items of common and mass consumption.
    • 12%: standard-rate goods and some services.
    • 18%: a large number of goods and most services fall here.
    • 28%: luxury goods and "demerit"/sin goods, taxed highest.
  • Step 3 — Classify each given good or service. Match each item to its correct slab based on your research, not on guesswork.
  • Step 4 — Present in a table with five columns (one per slab) and place each good or service in the right column, citing where you found the rate. …
