Q.What do you understand by the Internet of Things? List some of its potential applications.
IoT = ordinary physical objects ("things") + sensors + software + Internet connectivity, letting them collect data, talk to each other and be controlled remotely; applications span smart homes, wearables, smart cities, agriculture, healthcare, transport and industry.
The idea. Traditionally only computers and phones were connected to the Internet. The Internet of Things (IoT) extends connectivity to everything else — a fan, a car, a streetlight, a water pump. Each "thing" is fitted with sensors (to measure its environment), a small processor with software, and a communication module (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile network). The devices can then:
- Sense — collect data (temperature, location, motion, heart rate…),
- Communicate — send that data over the Internet to apps, servers or other devices, and
- Act — receive commands or make decisions automatically (switch off, raise an alarm, order a refill), usually without human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.
Potential applications
- Smart home / home automation — control lights, fans, ACs, geysers and door locks from a phone; security cameras and smoke detectors that send alerts; a fridge that warns when supplies run low.
- Wearables — smart watches and fitness bands that monitor steps, heart rate and sleep, and sync the data to health apps.
- Smart cities — sensor-based smart parking, smart street lights that dim when roads are empty, smart bins that signal when full, real-time traffic and pollution monitoring.
- Smart agriculture — soil-moisture and weather sensors that trigger drip irrigation automatically; livestock tracking.
- Healthcare — remote monitoring of patients' vitals, connected pacemakers and insulin pumps, alerts to doctors in emergencies.
- Transport and logistics — GPS fleet tracking, connected cars, cold-chain monitoring of goods in transit.
- Industry (IIoT) — machines that report their own condition so faults are predicted before breakdown (predictive maintenance).
In any IoT example, look for the same three-part pattern — sensor → network → action. Framing your answer that way covers both the definition and the application in one stroke.
The Internet of Things is a network of physical devices embedded with sensors, software and connectivity that lets them collect and exchange data and be controlled over the Internet. Applications: smart homes, wearables, smart cities, smart agriculture, remote healthcare, connected transport and industrial automation.
