The idea. Before Unicode, Hindi and other Indian-language documents were typed in legacy fonts (Krutidev, Shusha, DVB-TT etc.) that HACKED the ASCII range: the byte for "A" was simply drawn as a Devanagari glyph. The characters were never really Hindi — only the font made them look so. Unicode instead assigns every character of every script its own permanent code point (Devanagari occupies U+0900-U+097F), independent of any font.
Advantages of Unicode for Indian-language digital content:
- Platform independence — the document opens correctly on any OS, browser, or phone without installing the author's font; any Unicode font (Mangal, Nirmala UI, Lohit ...) can render it.
- No garbling on exchange — email, web pages, databases and apps interchange the text safely; with legacy fonts the receiver saw junk unless they had the exact font.
- Searchable and processable — search engines, editors and databases can find, sort, index and spell-check the text, because a क is always the same code, whatever it looks like.
- One standard for all Indian languages — Devanagari, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gurmukhi ... all coexist in one document under one encoding. …
