Sunil's tools (Google Chrome + Google Docs) are proprietary — Docs being an online, cloud-based application — while Jagdish's tools (Mozilla Firefox + LibreOffice Writer) are free and open-source software installed on the computer and usable offline.

The concept (categories of software). Software differs along two axes relevant here: licence (proprietary/closed-source vs free and open source) and delivery (installed desktop application vs web/cloud application). The teacher deliberately gave the two boys tool-sets from opposite corners.

Sunil's technologies — proprietary, cloud-centric

  • Google Chrome: a browser distributed free of cost (freeware) but proprietary — its full source code is closed and controlled by Google (its open-source base, Chromium, is a separate project).
  • Google Docs: a web-based (cloud) application and a proprietary service: nothing is installed; the word processor runs in the browser, documents are saved on Google's servers, and use requires an Internet connection and a Google account. Collaboration and anywhere-access are its strengths; dependence on connectivity and on Google's servers/terms is the trade-off.

Jagdish's technologies — free and open source, desktop

  • Mozilla Firefox: a free and open-source browser (Mozilla Public License) — anyone may inspect, modify and redistribute its source code.
  • LibreOffice Writer: a FOSS desktop word processor: installed locally, runs without Internet, stores files on the user's own computer (open document formats), and its source is open. No account or vendor lock-in; the trade-off is no built-in cloud collaboration.
