The respiratory system's function is the full gas-exchange cycle — moving air in and out, swapping gases with the blood, carrying those gases through the body, and swapping gases again at the tissues.

The chapter lists respiration's four processes as the respiratory system's core functions:

1. Ventilation — the physical movement of air into and out of the lungs, via the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli.

2. External respiration — gas exchange between the air that has reached the lungs (specifically the alveoli) and the blood in the surrounding capillaries; oxygen moves into the blood, carbon dioxide moves out into the lungs to be exhaled.

3. Transport of gases — oxygen and carbon dioxide are carried around the body in the blood (oxygen bound largely to haemoglobin, as the chapter notes elsewhere).

4. Internal respiration — gas exchange between the blood and the body's own tissues; oxygen moves out of the blood into the tissues, and carbon dioxide (a waste product of the tissues' own activity) moves into the blood to be carried back to the lungs. …
