The 3R principle organises solid waste management around three actions, generally applied in order of preference. Reduce means cutting down the amount of waste generated in the first place -- for example, choosing products with minimal packaging, or buying durable goods instead of disposable ones, so that less waste is ever created. Reuse means using an item again for its original purpose or a new one instead of discarding it after a single use -- for example, refilling a glass water bottle repeatedly, or repurposing an old container for kitchen storage.
