The Solvay process exploits the low solubility of sodium bicarbonate to precipitate it out of ammoniated brine saturated with CO2, then converts it to sodium carbonate by heating.

Principle: a saturated solution of common salt (brine) is first saturated with ammonia gas, and then CO2CO_2 gas is passed through it. Sodium bicarbonate, being the least soluble of the species present, precipitates out and is filtered off; the ammonia is recovered and recycled by treating the by-product ammonium chloride with slaked lime.

Balanced equations:

Step 1 (ammoniation + carbonation, forming sodium bicarbonate):

NaCl+NH3+CO2+H2O→NaHCO3↓+NH4ClNaCl + NH_3 + CO_2 + H_2O \rightarrow NaHCO_3\downarrow + NH_4Cl

Step 2 (calcination of the precipitated bicarbonate): …
