Maslow's theory ranks needs in five levels — physiological, safety, social, esteem and self-actualisation — and says lower-level needs must be satisfied first; a satisfied need stops motivating, so the next higher need takes over.

Abraham Maslow proposed that human needs follow a hierarchy and that behaviour is driven by the lowest unsatisfied need. The five levels, from lowest to highest, are:

1. Physiological (Basic) Needs

Needs for food, clothing, shelter, water and sleep — the most basic needs, met in the workplace through adequate wages and basic facilities.

2. Safety / Security Needs

Needs for physical and economic security, such as safe working conditions, job security and pension/insurance benefits.

3. Social (Affiliation / Belonging) Needs

The need for love, friendship, acceptance and a sense of belonging, satisfied through good relations with colleagues and a sense of being part of a group.

4. Esteem Needs

The need for self-respect, recognition, status and appreciation, met through praise, promotion and responsibility.
