Part (a)

Co-ordination is the orderly arrangement of group efforts to provide unity of action in pursuit of a common purpose. Five of its characteristics are:

  1. Co-ordination integrates group efforts. It gives a common focus to the different, sometimes divergent, efforts of individuals and departments so they merge into one meaningful whole.
  2. Co-ordination ensures unity of action. It acts as the binding force that keeps the activities of various departments (production, sales, finance, etc.) moving toward a single organisational goal.
  3. Co-ordination is a continuous process. It begins with planning and continues through organising, directing and controlling — it goes on as long as the organisation exists.
  4. Co-ordination is an all-pervasive function. It is needed at every level of management and in every department, because the activities of all functions are interdependent. …
