The Internet is the physical network infrastructure connecting computers globally, while the World Wide Web is one of many services that runs on top of the Internet, using hyperlinked documents accessed through browsers.

The confusion between these two terms is natural because we use them almost interchangeably in daily conversation, but they refer to fundamentally different things. Think of the Internet as the roads and highways, and the World Wide Web as one type of vehicle that travels on those roads.

The Internet: The Foundation

The Internet is the global network of interconnected computers and servers. It is the physical and logical infrastructure — cables (fiber optic, copper), routers, switches, satellites, wireless connections, and the protocols (like TCP/IP) that allow devices to communicate with each other.

The Internet was developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, originally as ARPANET, a project by the U.S. Department of Defense. Its purpose was to create a decentralized communication network that could survive partial outages.

Examples of services that use the Internet:

  • Email (using protocols like SMTP, POP3, IMAP)
  • File Transfer Protocol (FTP) for uploading and downloading files
  • Voice over IP (VoIP) services like Skype or WhatsApp calls
  • Online gaming (multiplayer games connecting players worldwide)
  • Video streaming services like YouTube or Netflix
  • Instant messaging applications like Telegram or Signal
  • The World Wide Web itself

All of these are different services running on the same underlying Internet infrastructure.

The World Wide Web: One Service Among Many

The World Wide Web (WWW or simply "the Web") is a system of interlinked hypertext documents and resources accessed via the Internet using a web browser. It was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1990 at CERN.

The Web uses three key technologies:

  1. HTTP/HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol) — the protocol for transferring web pages
  2. HTML (HyperText Markup Language) — the language for creating web pages
  3. URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) — the addressing system for web resources

When you type www.google.com in your browser, you are using the World Wide Web. The browser sends an HTTP request over the Internet to Google's servers, which respond with HTML documents, images, and other resources that your browser renders as a web page.

Examples of the World Wide Web in action:

  • Browsing websites like Wikipedia, Amazon, or educational portals
  • Reading blogs or news articles online
  • Watching videos on YouTube (the website interface, not just the streaming)
  • Using web-based email like Gmail (accessed through a browser, as opposed to an email client)
  • Shopping on e-commerce sites
  • Accessing online learning platforms like SWAYAM …
