White Hats: Ethical Hacker

A white hat hacker is someone who uses their technical knowledge not to break systems, but to find and help fix security flaws. The term comes from the old Western film convention where the hero wore a white hat and the villain wore a black one. These are hackers with good intentions — they are, in fact, security experts.

Organisations hire ethical or white hat hackers to check their systems for potential security threats and loopholes, and then to fix whatever weaknesses are found. This is a proactive approach: instead of waiting for a real attack to happen, the organisation invites a skilled professional to try to break in first, so that the damage can be prevented rather than repaired.

Technically, white hats work against black hats. That is, their entire purpose is to counteract the activities of malicious hackers — the ones who exploit vulnerabilities for personal gain, theft, or destruction.
